Creating PDFs
using ABBYY FineReader 5.0:
Open ABBYY FineReader on Yoruk
Scanning pages:
Click scan image on the toolbar. If the button on the toolbar says scan and read, don’t use it. You can find scan image under File. Scan the pages at 600 dpi, B/W Document. Make sure you scan the pages in the correct order
Creating Blocks:
Text:
Click on the T on the left toolbar. This will allow you to highlight text boxes. Use the mouse to outline text boxes. Right click on the box and choose Analyze layout in block. If it gets messed up, click on undo. Adjust the text boxes if you don’t like how they were analyzed. Each column must be in its own text box.
Pictures:
Click on the picture icon on the left toolbar. Outline the picture or graph. Make the box as close to the size of the picture/graph as possible to prevent formatting issues in Word.
Tables:
Click on the icon of the Table on the left toolbar. Outline the table. Right click and choose Analyze Layout in Block. If the table isn’t separated correctly, you can either add or remove separators by using the appropriate tools on the left toolbar.
*note: Analyze layout in block, adjusts formatting changes that tend to occur during OCR conversion.
READING BLOCKS:
Once all pages are scanned and outlined, click on Read All. You can scan and read each page one at a time or all at once. When all of the pages are red, ABBYY will highlight problems/errors in light blue. ABBYY does not always catch all of the problems

Correct mistakes in either word or abbyy. It is easier to make corrections in ABBYY because most will be highlighted. When corrections are complete, send all pages to Word using the icon on the toolbar on the top.
In Microsoft Word:
Check for column length, character spacing, font size, spelling, etc. When corrections are done, save the document. If the Acrobat icon on the toolbar, click on it. If the icon isn’t on the toolbar, click File, and then click Print. Change the printer to Acrobat Distiller and click OK. The PDF file will save to where the Word document is located. Check the PDF to make sure that it transferred over correctly. If you notice some page numbers are missing, go back to the Word document and make sure the text is within the margins.
