Does distributed practice benefit category learning (of artists and styles of paintings)?

Task:

Learn novel exemplars of paintings during each study session à transfer to novel exemplars during final test.

Stimuli:

4 styles of paintings that are easily distinguished using superficial characteristics, 3 artists within each style whose work is superficially similar. 15 exemplars per artist, 45 exemplars per style.

Subjects randomly assigned to between-subjects condition 1, 2, or 3 (100 subjects per condition).

Study 1: Randomly present 5 exemplars per artist. For each exemplar subject must guess: (1) the style of the painting by choosing 1 of the 4 options, and (2) the artist of the painting by choosing 1 of the 12 options. Provide 5 sec of feedback on correct style and correct artist. 60 trials (at 15 sec per trial) = 15 min per session.

Study 2: Randomly present 5 new exemplars (not presented during Study 1) per artist. For each exemplar subject must guess: (1) the style of the painting by choosing 1 of the 4 options, and (2) the artist of the painting by choosing 1 of the 12 options. Provide 5 sec of feedback on correct style and correct artist. 60 trials (at 15 sec per trial) = 15 min per session.

Test: Randomly present 5 new exemplars (not presented during Study 1 or 2) per artist. For each exemplar subject must guess: (1) the style of the painting by choosing 1 of the 4 options, and (2) the artist of the painting by choosing 1 of the 12 options. No feedback provided. 60 trials (at 10 sec per trial with feedback eliminated) = 10 min per session.

Exemplars are randomly assigned to sessions (Study 1, Study 2, and Test, see p. 4-5), and exemplars per session are the same for all subjects. Within-session, exemplars are presented in random order, with the constraint that no artist is immediately repeated and no style is immediately repeated.

Subjects: 300 lottery subjects (100 per condition).

Expected Results:

(1) Average performance during Study 1 similar for all subjects.

(2) If more practice benefits category learning, then on final test Condition 1 and Condition 2 > Condition 3.

(3) If spaced practice benefits category learning, then on final test Condition 2 > Condition 1.

Pre-Pilot Phase: (completed March, 2005, data available in “PaintingsPilotData.xls”)

Randomly assign 5 exemplars per artist to each of the three sessions (p. 4-5). Run 5 different subjects in each session to determine level of difficulty for each session.

Instructions:

In this experiment we are interested in how well you can learn to classify paintings according to specific styles and artists they belong to. You will complete several trials in which you are shown a painting as well as two multiple-choice tests. One of the multiple-choice tests will ask you to name the style of the painting, and the other will ask you to name the artist who painted it. An example is shown below (or, on next screen?)

Instructions, continued:

You will not be presented with any prior information about the styles and artists to be learned, so at first you may have to guess. When you see each painting, try to guess the style it belongs to, as well as the name of the artist who painted it (each painting has only one correct answer for style and artist). After you make these selections, you will be given feedback about the correct style and artist for that painting. Use this information to try and learn the styles and artists for all of the paintings you see.

This experiment will take you approximately 20 minutes to complete.
