Final Test

Study phase: Present all 30 facts in sentence format, in random order, with instructions to remember them for a later memory test. (fixed at 6 sec per fact x 30 facts = 3 min).

Test phase: Facts are in question format with 1-word answer. Presented 1 at a time in new random order, with instructions to type in correct answer. Allow unlimited time for response (but assume about 5 sec per response) (5 sec x 30 facts = 2.5 min)

Feedback:

Final test phase: Facts are in question format with 1-word answer (same as Test Phase). Presented 1 at a time in new random order, with instructions to type in correct answer. Allow unlimited time for response (but assume about 5 sec per response) (5 sec x 30 facts = 2.5 min). No feedback.

Total time to complete: Consent and instructions (3 min) + Study phase (3 min) + Test phase (2.5 min) + Feedback (3 min) + Final test (2.5 min) = 14 min.

Subjects: 100 lottery subjects per condition.

Expected Results:

Overall test performance:

Test performance similar for Condition 1 compared to Condition 2, and for Condition 3 compared to Condition 4.

Effect of feedback delay:

(1)   If delayed feedback > immediate, then Conditions 2 and 4 > Conditions 1 and 3.

(2)   If immediate feedback > delayed, then Conditions 1 and 3 > Conditions 2 and 4.

Effect of test delay:

(1)   If delayed test > immediate, then Conditions 3 and 4 > Conditions 1 and 2.

(2)   If immediate test > delayed, then Conditions 1 and 2 > Conditions 3 and 4.

Feedback Delay x Test Delay Interaction (potential simple main effects):

(1)   Delayed feedback > immediate, but just for immediate test: Condition 2 > Condition 1

(2)   Delayed feedback > immediate, but just for delayed test: Condition 4 > Condition 3

(3)   Immediate feedback > delayed, but just for immediate test: Condition 1 > Condition 2

(4)   Immediate feedback > delayed, but just for delayed test: Condition 3 > Condition 4

(5)   Delayed test > immediate, but just for immediate feedback: Condition 3 > Condition 4

(6)   Delayed test > immediate, but just for delayed feedback: Condition 4 > Condition 3

(7)   Immediate test > delayed, but just for immediate feedback: Condition 1 > Condition 3

(8)   Immediate test > delayed, but just for delayed feedback: Condition 2 > Condition 4
